Three, Two, One…

Three tiny letters make all the difference.
Two— even better.
One—a place to rest.

It all started with a vicarious jaunt to the English countryside, via Lark Rise to Candleford. It’s a sweet show, one of those I’ll watch and watch again, all about a young woman named Laura Timmins who leaves her family in the village of Lark Rise to work at the post office in nearby town, Candleford.

LARK RISE TO CANDLEFORD

“Our Laura,” her family calls her. Always when just plain “Laura” will do:

“Will Our Laura visit tomorrow?”

“How is Our Laura?” the neighbors ask.

I adore that. It’s a part of Lark Rise’s charm, the way the whole village rallies around each other, claims each other as their own whenever they have a chance. And because of it, we never forget where Our Laura comes from, where her people are, where they love her no matter what. Where she can always go and know: she belongs.

It got me thinking about what it is to belong. About how we have One who thinks of us the way Laura’s family speaks of her.

A King, always with a heart full of Abba-love. That’s my Amanda, He thinks of me. That’s my _{insert your wonderful name here}____, He thinks of you. He’s drawn us with lovingkindness, given everything for us to pay the price and let us belong.

“Belonging” comes from the Old High German “Bilangen,” meaning “to reach.”

Belonging to Him means…

When the storms rock us? He Reaches out, steadies us.
When we wander, lose sight of Him? He Reaches out, gathers us in.
When we forget who Reaches out, He reminds us

I made you.
I have a purpose for you
I love you. With an everlasting love.

Our – Three tiny letters that make all the difference.
My – Two letters: even better.
I– A place to rest. To belong.

“Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine.” Isaiah 43:1b
