Vacation… or Refuge?
Tonight I landed in a pocket of peace.
Weary was I, bone tired, beat, drained, and what have you. I headed out to water the garden and as my whole being eased at the sound of water pouring into earth, I was tucked in. Swaddled by the evening—or rather, it’s Creator—in that moment.
It was a pocket of peace, sewn from twilight sky and stolen moment and cool breeze… and my soul quieted.
Isn’t He good? We don’t always need a vacation. Look at that word. VACATion. Vacate. We don’t always need to.
Sometimes, most of the time probably, all we need when we’re weary, bone tired, drained and what have you, is to stay the course, savor those moments our Savior weaves for us—little pockets of rest along the way. I’m always surprised when they come, but what a wonderful surprise they are!
And why should I be surprised, anyhow? Why, when the Lover of our Souls who gave all for us, always provides. Always sustains. Always “protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.”
I’ve heard it said that when you’re going about the work set before you, you can be tired in it without being tired of it.
And in those times? When there is no possible way to vacate—not even the desire to vacate, because you know you’re where you’re meant to be and it’s a wonderful thing—
He is our refuge. He is our peace.
Stay the course.
“For He himself is our peace…” Ephesians 2:14
“My soul finds rest in God alone;
my salvation comes from him.”
Psalm 62:1
I love the way you weave matters of the heart into these poetic revelations. As always, a wonderful (and timely!) moment of encouragement for me. Thank you!
Joanne, thanks for your kindness. Yes, He is so faithful to encourage us right when we need it, as I’m experiencing already today! 🙂
